A Local’s Guided Walk Through Malta’s Silent City
Long before Valletta existed, Mdina was Malta’s capital, and it hasn’t changed much since. Known as the “Silent City,” Mdina is a historic walled town perched on a hilltop at the centre of the island, with a history stretching back through Phoenician, Roman, Arab, and Norman rule.
This tour is led by a guide who has lived in neighbouring Rabat their whole life and knows both towns inside out. Hence, it is not someone reciting facts from a script, but someone sharing the place they call home. You’ll walk through Mdina’s narrow, winding streets, built deliberately to confuse invading armies, past aristocratic palazzos with centuries-old family crests still above their doors, and out to viewpoints looking over much of the island.
From Mdina, the tour continues into Rabat, Mdina’s quieter twin town just outside the old walls, where centuries of Maltese daily life have unfolded around its churches and catacombs. Being both a fully licensed professional guide and a lifelong local, your guide brings together the expertise of a trained historian with the kind of detail you only get from someone who actually lives there which gives you a more insightful perspective on which families still live behind which palace walls, and the small stories that never make it into a guidebook.
This is a walking tour built around storytelling as much as sightseeing. It is the kind of experience that turns a short walk through two small towns into something you’ll be talking about long after you’ve left Malta.
